Lean Production or Lean Manufacturing is a manufacturing/production system best characterized as relentlessly eliminating waste from all of its’ activities and operations. Lean strives to produce products (and deliver services):
- On-Time
- Using as few resources as possible
- Better, faster and cheaper than competitors
- While eliminating as much waste as possible
When deploying Lean, you are in pursuit of waste elimination, culture change to enforce an improving culture and more output and throughput with less resources.
So the definition is: A strategy which strives to embed a culture of continuous improvements, whereby everyone seeks to identify and eliminate waste, enabling the business to obtain a higher customer satisfaction at minimal cost and best in class Lead Time.
A popular misconception is that Lean is suited only for manufacturing. Not true!
Lean applies in every business and every process. It is not a tactic or a cost reduction program, but a way of thinking and acting for the entire organization, which means the mind-set has to change:
- The optimist: The glass is half full
- The pessimist: The glass is half empty
- The Lean thinker: Why is the glass twice as big as it should be
In general, doing more with less!
“Do it first, then think”, which means experimenting. You cannot know if something will work until you try it.
Lean Principles:
- Identify Value
- Map the Value Stream
- Create Flow
- Establish Pull
- Seek Perfection
How can ME CFO help your organization?
ME CFO can:
- Train your employees in the Lean principles to create a new mind-set/culture-shift throughout the entire organization
- Analyze your work processes throughout your entire organization and optimize it using Lean principles
- Work with only part of your supply chain to follow e.g. a production line to see if Lean could be used to create a shorter Lead Time for a specific product (most often it will)
or ME CFO can prepare a seminar / workshop:
- Using visual games / building blocks to show how a different mindset can change a daily task and streamline a process using Lean principles
- Work with your organizations daily tasks using Lean principles to show the efficiencies created when incorporated in the work environment
At ME CFO, we have done this many times and we can help you too!
